Today in my first year seminar we held an Each One Teach one also known as an EOTO. One group did events that helped race relations, while the other did events that hurt race relations.
An event that hurt race relations was The Compromise of 1877. The event was signed by Rutherford B. Hayes. The Democrats agreed not to block Haye's victory as long as the Republicans withdrew all federal troops down south. As a result of the compromise Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina became Democratic once again. Another event that hurt race relations was the Wilmington Insurrection of 1898. This event was a politically motivated attack by white against Wilmington African American citizens. The violence began on Thursday, November 10. North Carolina state elections had shown a shift of power towards the Democrats. Wilmington remained Republican though. This lead to violence within the town.
An event that helped racial relations was the Civil Rights Act of 1875. The Civil Rights Act of 1875 is also known as the Enforcement Act or Force Act. This act was in response to civil rights violations to African Americans. It's goal was to protect all citizens in their civil and legal rights. The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendment also helped racial relations, and are known as the Reconstruction Amendments.
