EOTO: Anti Civil Rights vs. Pro Civil Rights

Today in class two groups gave Each One Teach Ones to the rest of the class. The Anti Civil Rights group talked about the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. MLK was assassinated April 4, 1968 in the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. Martin Luther King Jr. was a baptist minster and founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. King was an activate member and leader of the civil rights movement. Malcolm X also an activate member of the civil rights movement was assassinated as well. Malcolm X was assassinated February 21, 1965 while giving a speech to his Organization of Afro-American Unity.

The Pro Civil Rights group talked about the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended segregation in public places and banned discrimination on the base of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. This is known as one of the best legal achievements of the civil rights movement. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The goal of the act was to overcome legal barriers at the state and local level that prevented African Americans from voting. African Americans right to vote was already guaranteed by the 15th Amendment to the constitution.
